Growing tips for Giant Pumpkins! The seedling you pick up at the May 1st sale is not ready for planting outside yet. Keep it inside, in a sunny, warm location, and keep the soil moist.
Plant it outside in around 2-3 weeks. Extra fussy step (if you are keen): place black plastic over the area you plan to plant a few days before planting out- thus pre-warming the soil.
The main vine will grow in the opposite direction to the first main leaf. Plant with the main leaf facing the back wall and aim the main growth at the space you want the plant to grow into.
One of our farmers has successfully grown 900lb plus pumpkins for years, and does not use chemical fertilizers. He recommends these two websites for good growing tips.

These plants will produce a good size pumpkin (30+) pounds with very little fussing involved. Every bit of extra work adds quite a lot of weight.
See you at North Arm Farm on October 17th!
